Subscription Skincare Boxes Get a Makeover

DIY Sunscreen

Direct-to-consumer subscription services and boxes are getting a makeover as of late, delivering innovative new twists on sharing skincare products targeting different kinds of consumers.

The top three trending kinds of skincare subscription boxes? Skincare for men, skincare boxes for clean-conscious consumers, and prescription-strength skincare subscription services.

Subscriptions for men

The male skincare market is on the rise, and subscription box companies are taking note.

While grooming subscription boxes for men that focused on needs like shaving have reigned in popularity, now skincare items are the products male consumers most want delivered to their homes.

GQ explains the recent popularity rise in subscriptions for male consumers:

“A subscription service can keep you stocked up on everyday essentials…It’s nice to never run out of the stuff you need to look your best. If you’re in the market to put any of those needs on autopilot, here are the brand names you should know about first and foremost. They don’t all come in boxes, per se, but they all make for the perfect gift for yourself, for a well-groomed guy, or a soon-to-be well-groomed guy.”

Many of the male-oriented skincare subscriptions are also scoring with consumers, because they offer an easy way to finally began a skincare routine – without any research or legwork on the consumer’s part.

Green-and-clean skincare

Clean, green skincare products have never been more popular, and clean-curious consumers are now using subscription boxes to test out new products or find new favorites.

“Consumers are increasingly becoming aware of the benefits associated with the use of cosmetics containing natural ingredients. This is encouraging cosmetic companies to offer a wide range of skincare and haircare products containing natural organic ingredients…The increasing consumer shift toward the use of natural and organic cosmetics is expected to drive the global cosmetic ingredients market growth,” explains Technavio.

Additionally, clean-and-green beauty boxes are hugely popular thanks to their ability to tap into even more niche eco-friendly markets and interests, like:

  • Vegan and cruelty-free products
  • Holistic options
  • Products that feature popular natural ingredients
  • Detox claims
  • Anti-pollution claims

With more consumers looking to purchase products that highlight the ingredients they’re formulated without, clean beauty subscription boxes are an easy, affordable option to try a wide variety of new, eco-chic skincare products.

Prescription-strength skincare

Forget heading to the doctor or aesthetican’s office. Today’s consumer wants prescription-strength skincare products delivered straight to their doorstep.

Primarily sold at dermatology offices, medispas, or authorized e-commerce websites, professional-strength skincare products offer higher concentrations of effective active ingredients. For consumers, this can mean better, faster results for their skin.

Additionally, medical-grade skincare products have another benefit: they typically last longer than their commercial counterparts.  “Most of the medical-grade companies will use highly stabilized ingredients that last longer and take longer to degrade,” Rachel Nazarian, MD, told Byrdie. “Many of them also use more involved mechanisms of absorption to enhance delivery to deeper areas of skin.”

While medical-grade skincare subscription boxes are notably on the pricier end, many consumers appreciate the customized curation and the chance to test out a variety of high-end products. As skincare consumers grow more and more savvy and educated, expect to see demand for medical-grade skincare products rise – in subscription boxes, at store shelves, and online.
